The Coronation of the Sultan of Johor: The Royal Banquet

Well, this is a nice surprise!

The newly crowned Sultan of Johor hosted a Royal Banquet on 23 March, the evening of his coronation, at the Istana Besar Palace in Johor Bahru.

Known guests (from the photos) included the Johor Royals, the Prime Minister of Malaysia,  The Sultan of Brunei, and the Sultans of Pahang and Terengganu.

Given this was a fairly private affair I was not expecting to see pictures, however the official coronation website have very kindly put some photos up, and they are very interesting!

First, we had the Yang di-Pertuan Agong show up, as depicted above. It was very nice to see him too since we missed him at the actual coronation ceremony. While there was a representative from Kedah present, Sultan Abdul Halim's absence was noticeable to me at least. Perhaps there is some protocol about the reigning Yang di-Pertuan Agong attending a State coronation ceremony? I'd have look into that. Or maybe he was just busy.

In any case he is one of my favourite Malay royals so it is always a pleasure to see him. Unfortunately there are no pictures of his consort, and current Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen) of MalaysiaSultanah Haminah.  No doubt she was also present and hopefully we will see a photo of her to confirm in the not to distant future.

For those of you who like to keep score of these things, we can expect her to have been wearing the Gendik Diraja tiara, reserved for the Queen.

Speaking of tiaras...

That is the newly crowned Permaisuri (Queen) of Johor, Raja Zarith Sofiah, in the Johor Consort Tiara which we have already been discussing on the blog. And the first time we have seen her wear it. Huzzah! Now I'll have to update that post again.

Continuing the tiara theme...

Here we have the Crown Prince and Princess of Johor, and she too has decided to surprise us with a new tiara, this is an emerald one, with matching necklace, earrings, and bracelet, (so - a parure). It is one which Raja Zarith Sofiah has worn previously.

For someone who has only been in the family for a few months (they got married in October last year) this makes three tiaras from the Johor collection she has now worn. Impressive! And nice to know Raja Zarith Sofiah is happy to share.

One more tiara...
And here is the Crown Prince greeting...wait...there is another tiara!

If you look closely, you can see another tiara'd head behind Tunku Ismail there. If I am not mistaken it is his sister, Tunku Aminah, which would be another first, because I'm not aware of her having worn a tiara at all before now.

It is not 100% certain that it is her. I don't recognise the tiara specifically from this picture. I think a tiara debut for her father's coronation would be a lovely thing, though. What do you think?

Sadly, no pictures of the Sultanahs of Brunei, Pahang and Terengganu respectively yet.

For those of you who like to keep score of these things, we can expect Brunei and Terengganu to wear their usual tiaras. Sultanah Kalsom of Pahang has a lot of sass however, and a lot of tiaras. She may have shaken it up and swapped out the tiara she wore to the ceremony for one of the others in her collection.

Let's hope we do see some pictures of all these ladies soon.

More pictures of the guests at the Official Website. Do check it out.

Update: April 1 2015
A number of pictures of the other guests have now surfaced, check out the jewel in focus thread.
